How to Dispose of Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR)?
Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) treatment focuses on three core goals: maximizing the recycling of valuable materials, reducing waste volume to minimize landfill usage, and recovering energy from combustible components like plastics and rubber.
With roughly 40–50% of ASR composed of hydrocarbon-based materials (including plastics, fibers, wood, paper, tar, and rubber), we can drastically cut the volume sent to landfills by following this optimized industrial recycling workflow:
Step 1: Pre-Crushing & Size Reduction
Further reduce ASR to a uniform particle size using a fine crusher, ensuring consistent material flow for subsequent sorting and separation stages.
Step 2: Metal Recovery via Magnetic & Eddy Current Separation
Extract valuable ferrous and non-ferrous metals using high-efficiency magnetic separators and eddy current separators. This step recovers iron, steel, aluminum, and copper for direct reuse in metal manufacturing.
Step 3: Combustible Fraction Separation
Separate combustible materials (plastics, rubber, fabrics, and wood) from inert residues using sensor sorters and vibrating screens. These fractions can be processed into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for energy recovery.
Step 4: Glass Purification & Recovery
Isolate and purify remaining glass fragments into high-purity grades using magnetic separators, eddy current separators, and glass color sorters, making the glass suitable for secondary glass production.
Step 5: Final Residue Disposal
The remaining inert dirt and non-recyclable residues are safely sent to controlled landfills, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Solid Waste Shredder→ Chain Scraper Conveyor → Trommel Screen (screening out materials of inconsistent size), → Air Separator (screening of light floating objects such as lint), → Trommel Screen (separation of large and small materials), → Electromagnetic Overband Magnetic Separator (sorting iron metal), eddy current separators (Sorting copper, aluminum, zinc and other metals), → Stainless Steel Separators (sorting stainless steel) → Remaining Tailings.
